Publication historyeditDevelopment and inspirationsedit. Captain Marvel first appeared in Whiz Comics 2 Feb. C. C. Beck. After the success of National Comics new superhero characters Superman and Batman, Fawcett Publications started its own comics division in 1. Bill Parker to create several hero characters for the first title in their line, tentatively titled Flash Comics. Besides penning stories featuring Ibis the Invincible, Spy Smasher, Golden Arrow, Lance OCasey, Scoop Smith, and Dan Dare for the new book, Parker also wrote a story about a team of six superheroes, each possessing a special power granted to them by a mythological figure. Watch Eddie Dailymotion. Fawcett Comics executive director Ralph Daigh decided it would be best to combine the team of six into one hero who would embody all six powers. Parker responded by creating a character he called Captain Thunder. Staff artist Charles Clarence C. C. Beck was recruited to design and illustrate Parkers story, rendering it in a direct, somewhat cartoony style that became his trademark. When Bill Parker and I went to work on Fawcetts first comic book in late 1. Beck told an interviewer. We decided to give our reader a real comic book, drawn in comic strip style and telling an imaginative story, based not on the hackneyed formulas of the pulp magazine, but going back to the old folk tales and myths of classic times. The first issue of the comic book, printed as both Flash Comics 1 and Thrill Comics 1, had a low print run in the fall of 1. Shortly after its printing, however, Fawcett found it could not trademark Captain Thunder, Flash Comics, or Thrill Comics, because all three names were already in use. Consequently, the book was renamed Whiz Comics, and Fawcett artist Pete Costanza suggested changing Captain Thunders name to Captain Marvelous, which the editors shortened to Captain Marvel. The word balloons in the story were re lettered to label the hero of the main story as Captain Marvel. Whiz Comics 2 cover dated Feb. InspirationeditWhiz Comics 2. His visual appearance was modeled after that of Fred Mac. Murray, a popular American actor of the period,1. Cary Grant and Jack Oakie were made as well. Fawcett Publications founder, Wilford H. Fawcett, was nicknamed Captain Billy, which inspired the name Billy Batson as well as Marvels title. Fawcetts earliest magazine was titled Captain Billys Whiz Bang, which inspired the title Whiz Comics. In addition, Fawcett took several of the elements that had made Superman the first popular comic book superhero super strength and speed, science fiction stories, a mild mannered reporter alter ego and incorporated them into Captain Marvel. Fawcetts circulation director Roscoe Kent Fawcett recalled telling the staff, Give me a Superman, only have his other identity be a 1. IntroductioneditIn addition to introducing the main character and his alter ego, Captain Marvels first adventure in Whiz Comics 2 also introduced his archenemy, the evil Doctor Sivana, and found Billy Batson talking his way into a job as an on air radio reporter. Captain Marvel was an instant success, with Whiz Comics 2 selling over 5. By 1. 94. 1, he had his own solo series, Captain Marvel Adventures, while he continued to appear in Whiz Comics, as well as periodic appearances in other Fawcett books, including Master Comics. Copyright infringement lawsuit and cancellationeditThrough much of the Golden Age of Comic Books, Captain Marvel proved to be the most popular superhero character of the medium, and his comics outsold all others. Captain Marvel Adventures sold fourteen million copies in 1. Largest Circulation of Any Comic Magazine. Part of the reason for this popularity included the inherent wish fulfillment appeal of the character to children, as well as the humorous and surreal quality of the stories. Billy Batson typically narrated each Captain Marvel story, speaking directly to his reading audience from his WHIZ radio microphone, relating each story from the perspective of a young boy. The franchise was expanded to introduce teen spin off characters to Captain Marvel who, unlike Billy, remained kids in superhero form1. In late 1. 94. 1 and in 1. Captain Marvels sidekick Captain Marvel, Jr. Whiz Comics 2. 5 1. Mary Marvel in Captain Marvel Adventures 1. Both Captain Marvel, Jr. Mary Marvel were given their own eponymous books in addition to appearing as the lead features in Master Comics and Wow Comics, respectively. Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr., and Mary Marvel appeared together in another publication, The Marvel Family. Detective Comics later known as National Comics Publications, National Periodical Publications, and today known as DC Comics sued both Fawcett Comics and Republic Pictures for copyright infringement in 1. Captain Marvel was based on their character Superman. After seven years of litigation, the National Comics Publications v. Fawcett Publications case went to trial in 1. Although the presiding judge decided that Captain Marvel was an infringement, DC was found to be negligent in copyrighting several of their Superman daily newspaper strips, and it was decided that National had abandoned the Superman copyright. As a result, the initial verdict, delivered in 1. Fawcetts favor. National appealed this decision, and Judge Learned Hand declared in 1. Nationals Superman copyright was in fact valid. Judge Hand did not find that the character of Captain Marvel itself was an infringement, but rather that specific stories or super feats could be infringements, and this would have to be determined in a retrial. He had a previous commitment a family vacation. Were in the mountains, he said by cellphone Monday. Its an annual trip that I plan, so I didnt want to break that commitment. As it turned out, he got the best of both worlds a great day in the foothills of the B. C. Rockies, plus the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Mini Series or Movie. He didnt watch the Emmys on TV, but got the news soon enough. We were watching a herd of elk that had just crossed us on the road, he relates. We were out hiking and when I got back to the vehicle I saw a message on the phone. It was about eight or nine at night it was a nice way to cap the day, for sure. Seeing some Rocky Mountain elk, having a glorious day in the mountains, and then to get that message, that was pretty nice. The 4. Campbell River native received the Emmy for his portrayal of Bobby Kennedy in The Kennedys, a miniseries that stirred up a lot of controversy in the U. S. The series drew flack from the Kennedy family, was dropped by the History Channel in the States, then was alternately praised and savaged in the American press. It was understandable that the critics were as polarized as they were in the United States, because politically the U. S. is totally polarized, said Pepper. So the critics were either Democratic or Republican in their views, and they either loved it or they hated it. Watch I Saw The Light Dailymotion there. Some of the reviews said things like ham fisted hatchet job, and other reviews said the best thing ever put on television. At that point I just stopped reading, he laughs. Theres just no winning that one. Pepper sees his win as a vindication for the production. Its such a cool validation for so many people that worked on that production, he says. It was a gruelling, challenging project to have it recognized this way, with the Canadian Geminis and now with the Emmys, it makes me feel very, very good for all the people who were involved, that worked so hard. We sat down and went through all the photos we could find of Bobby, analyzed his face and figured out how we could adjust my features prosthetically, he said. And then hired a tremendous dialect coach by the name of John Nelles. You bring in the right people and they make you look great. Pepper hasnt had any feedback from the Kennedy clan about his performance, and probably wont. But he came out of the experience with tremendous respect for Bobby Kennedy. I admire the fact that he spoke from his heart, he said. He was one of the very few politicians Ive ever heard speak with such genuine emotion and honesty about subjects of love and compassion, freedom and equality. It was such a difficult time in America. Americans but people all over the world. He really stood by those values, and lived and died fighting for them. It was such a refreshing thing to study, and to hear those speeches, and to understand who the inner man was.
