If you need a language learning program for a language Duolingo doesnt support, I recommend looking first to Rosetta Stone, which is our Editors Choice among paid language learning software. But if youre looking to pick up a new language that is in the catalog, I highly recommend using Duolingo and its apps a few minutes every day. Its great on its own or in conjunction with a class or another paid program. Languages Offered. Duolingo offers a wide array of language learning courses for people with different native languages. Speakers of, say, French, have a different set of options than people who are native Spanish speakers. For the purpose of this review, I summarize the language options for English speakers only, noting their state of completion. Duolingo has 2. 0 fully developed courses Danish, Dutch, Esperanto, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, and Welsh. These programs are considered very stable. In addition to these languages, Duolingo has several programs that are in beta or hatching. Hatching means they are still being developed, and you can see their percent toward completion when you visit the site. As of this writing, the programs in beta are Hungarian and Swahili. Most of the languages listed so far are also available in the Duolingo mobile apps, too, though there isnt perfect synergy. For example, the Japanese course is fully available in the Duolingo app for i. Phone its not supported yet in the web app, but the i. Phone version does not yet offer Czech, Indonesian, or Hindi. If you cant find the language you need in Duolingo, there are other apps to try. Rosetta Stone has courses for 2. English or British English. Because Rosetta Stone is a paid product, you wont find any languages that are half baked, the way some are in Duolingo. For hard to find languages, I recommend looking to three other language learning programs Pimsleur, Transparent Language, and Mango Languages. Pimsleur has 5. 0 language programs, and is excellent, but its almost all audio based. I dont mind that its audio based, though some people do. Transparent Language has 1. English and not counting transliterated versions separately. Transparent Language is very self directed, and it takes some discipline to work through the lessons. Mango is my least favorite of these three, but it has programs for 6. Burn Notice Season 7 Netflix. Another option for learners on a budget is to try public libraries. Quite a few libraries in the US offer online access to Mango Languages, Rosetta Stone, and other language learning programs, through their digital catalog, meaning you dont have to go to a branch to get the software. The Price of Learning Languages. As mentioned, Duolingo is free to use. The app is now ad supported, so youre likely to see advertisements in the margins of the website or at the end of a lesson. Formerly, Duolingo made money by offering translation services to companies via crowdsourcing. Learners could opt in to translate material from various websites in a section called Immersion, but that has been scrapped. The app remains free, however, with a few other revenue streams, including in app purchases, a forthcoming Duolingo Plus membership option available only in the Android app as of now, and a paid English exam, which is separate from the core app. If you choose to pay nothing at all, you still get a stellar experience. To give you a sense of how much paid language learning programs typically cost, a 1. Rosetta Stone membership has a list price of 2. Living Language offers a one year online package for 1. Theres also a Living Language Platinum subscription for 1. Transparent Language charges 1. The audio program Pimsleur Comprehensive costs 1. MP3 downloads, and while its the least interactive of the language learning programs Ive tested, the pedagogy itself is of very high quality. If you ever dreamed of learning a language while you drive to and from work each day, the all audio Pimsleur is the package to get. Duolingos Structure. To get access to Duolingo, you can sign up with an email address and password, or you can authenticate via Facebook or Twitter. Then you pick which languages you want to learn from the list. You can sign up for as many languages as you want. Ive used Duolingo extensively in Spanish and German, and Ive dabbled in a few other languages, too. Whenever I test a language learning program, however, I try to look at a language Ive never learned before. This time, I tried Romanian. The exercises cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking, although you can optionally turn off the speaking exercises if youre in a place where talking out loud might be embarrassing or rude. Speaking here means talking into a voice recognition system. There is no live interaction with other students or teachers in Duolingo. Some language learning programs offer live e tutoring via video conference. Rosetta Stone and Living Language are two examples. Duolingo keeps track of your progress and participation as you learn. The Duolingo mobile apps let you pick up your learning where you leave off in the Web app, and vice versa. When you sign in, a home screen shows you a roadmap of what youre going to learn. That kind of outline may sound like a minor feature, but when its missing from a language learning program, it really hurts your ability to learn well and study consistently. Duolingo prompts you to enter a goal, such as studying every day and earning, say, 3. Ten points is equivalent to completing one lesson, which takes me around five minutes. Duolingo watches how often you hit or exceed your goals and rewards you with happy messages on screen and lingots, which are in app credits you can use to unlock additional content or features. For example, you can buy a double or nothing perk that gives you twice as many lingot rewards the next time you hit your goal for a certain number of days in a row. If you are an experienced student, you can test out of various sections. If you dont pass the test, you cant jump ahead. Rather, you have to work through units and lessons in order to progress. You can jump around a little bit within a unit for different types of learning content at the same level of difficulty, but you cant skip ahead from, say, learning basic vocabulary to working on verb tenses. I like this rule about not being able to jump ahead. It gives me clear guidance on what to study next and what my true abilities are. If you prefer more freedom, especially if youre more experienced in the language youre studying, I recommend Transparent Language Online. It has a really hard placement test that puts you at the right point in the program, but it also lets you skip ahead to any lesson you want. Language Learning Components. The core teaching in Duolingo is extremely clear. The exercises are solid and replicate some of the typical drills you might be familiar with from better known language software such as Rosetta Stone. Exercises build on one another so that youre introduced to words and concepts at the right point in the program. Typical lessons have multiple choice questions, listen and write exercises, translation exercises, and spoken exercises, too. Slack Review Rating PCMag. Slack makes communication among team members not only easier, but better. The trick to loving this messaging platform is knowing when and how to use it, and what to expect from it. Does it replace email No. Does it help cut back on needless internal email Often, yes. In Slack, teams set up spaces, called channels, to have conversations. The big difference between it and email is that in Slack, most conversations are optional, whereas with email the assumption is that participation is required of all recipients. Slack works very well as a collaboration tool in business because of its notifications, which are plentiful and customizable. It also supports audio and video calls. Youll be pleasantly surprised to peel back its layers of complexity. Here at PCMag, we use Slack, and its our top pick for online communication and collaboration. Plans and Pricing. Slack has a free option as well as two tiers of paid plans, called Standard and Plus. You can use Slack Free with as many people as you want, but there are limitations. You can only have audio and video calls between two people, not groups. Free accounts are restricted to 5. GB of file storage for uploads across the entire team, and users can only search the most recent 1. Free accounts are also restricted to having no more than 1. More about integrated apps in a bit. A Standard Slack account costs 8. A Standard account includes the ability to search an unlimited number of messages and have unlimited integrations. Standard accounts have a file storage limit of 1. GB per person, and group calls are supported. Guests are allowed to join, which is helpful if your team works frequently with external clients or collaborators. Team administrators can mandate two factor authentication for all users if they like, as well. The Slack Standard account comes with a few more perks, too, including advanced usage statistics and priority support. The Slack Plus account, which costs 1. GB of storage per person for uploads. Plus account holders are promised 2. They also have the ability to provision and deprovision users. An Enterprise option has been on the horizon for more than a year as of this writing, but is not officially available yet. Very large organizations in need of a team messaging solution should contact Slack for more information. Atlassian Hip. Chat, another team messaging platform that also has a free and paid plan, costs significantly less than Slack for its Premium version. Hip. Chat Premium costs 2 per user per month. It also includes group audio chat, video chat, and screen sharing. Slack doesnt have native screen sharing yet, although it is available through a third party app integration with Room or Zoom. For Hip. Chats price, you get unlimited file sharing and storage, as well as unlimited message history. Its a pretty good value, comparatively. Another messaging app for teams called Ryver only has a free version at the moment, but has announced it will offer a more premium paid service in the future. For now, its free app comes with no limitations on users, guests, teams, chats, posts, search, or uploads. It also has no ads. Ryver isnt nearly as slick and responsive as Slack or Hip. Chat, however. Getting Started. Make no mistake, Slack takes some learning, with an adjustment period of hours if youre lucky, or in my case, a few weeks. Part of getting started is exploring the apps mobile, desktop, and Web, settings, and configurations, to learn whats possible. The other reason it takes time is because the team itself needs to figure out its rules of engagement. If you are joining an existing Slack team, there may already be some etiquette in place, in which case you need to take the time to learn what it is. To log into Slack, you have to go to your teams unique URL. Then you can sign in with a username and password. Slack supports two factor authentication, and when logging into its mobile apps, you see an option to have a key delivered to you so that you dont have to type a password. Slack gets a lot of little things right, such as the ability to edit a message after youve posted it, and decently sized previews of pages when you add links. Screen space is adequately used. Because its not uncommon to be invited to more than one Slack account, you can quickly switch between the accounts from the left sidebar. You can also customize each account to appear in a different color theme, which helps tremendously in keeping multiple groups straight. First Impressions. When I first started using Slack, the app felt disorganized to me, cluttered in a way that made me worry Id lose track of what was happening or miss important information. It also seemed very chaotic. The key to making it more useful, however, is to customize the apps alerts so that you only get notified regarding conversations that are relevant to you. When people talk about Slack being a pull rather than push communication tool, they mean that information is freely available to you, but you have to go get it or pull it toward you. Contrast that to email, where information is pushed to you, and you are expected to consume it, even if its not relevant. So the trick to using Slack effectively is figuring out how to make sure youre pulling the right information. You do that through the settings and options. In addition to your setting up the right settings and options, success with Slack also depends on your teams ability to use tags, Channels, and signs appropriately. Now that Ive used Slack for more than two years both among friends and for work, Ive become much more comfortable with it. I trust that others will use an symbol followed by my name or send me a direct message if they need something from me. I also set up keyword alerts and enabled a do not disturb setting for when Im usually asleep in my time zone. Getting comfortable did not happen overnight. Configuration really is half the battle, though. The other half of the battle is culture. If you use Slack in a workplace setting, company culture will drive how Slack is used, and conversely, the use of Slack will shape the corporate culture. For this reason, its very important that people in leadership roles actively participate in Slack when its used. I still dont believe Slack is an effective tool on its own for managing tasks and workflow, the way Asana or Atlassian JIRA is. Nor is it appropriate for managing projects, which is better handled by a dedicated project management service such as Zoho Projects. It can be used in tandem with these other apps and services, however, and then its really powerful. More on integrating with other apps in a bit. Slack Apps and Beta Apps. Slack is available for a variety of devices and platforms, but its a real time, cloud based tool, so you need an Internet connection to use it. There are mobile apps for i. OS, Android, and Windows Phone. Theres a Web app, as well as desktop apps for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Actually, there are two versions of the desktop apps for Mac and Windows. Theres a standard one thats little more than the Web app in a wrapper, and then there are beta apps of more fully developed desktop apps. At the time of this writing, the beta desktop apps do not have any special functionality compared with whats in the standard desktop apps. They may be slightly faster, but they may also be buggier, seeing as they are still in beta. The beta apps are freely available to download and use. But they dont have anything special. To get video calls, you need one of the desktop apps or to be running Slack in the Chrome browser. Users who join a group video call via a mobile device get audio only. The mobile app has its own uses. As someone who works in a different time zone than my colleagues, I find the mobile app extremely beneficial. If something important requires my attention at a time when Im unlikely to be at my workstation, I get a notification on my phone.
